Angel
Neil Jordan
Paying tribute to legendary actor Stephen Rea, we revisit this quintessential Irish classic. Angel (1981) was Neil Jordan’s feature film debut and Stephen Rea’s first lead role. Rea is riveting as Danny, a saxophonist who gets in over his head when he witnesses several gruesome murders. Obsessed with finding the killers, Danny spirals down into a web of secrets, lies, and paramilitary violence. Jordan’s flawless direction elevates the film over its film noir roots and succeeds in crafting a unique cinematic style that would change Irish cinema for good.
Saxophonist Danny witnesses the murder of his band manager and a deaf-mute girl after a gig. Questioned by the police, he remembers only the orthopedic shoes of the killers’ leader. So begins his quest to avenge her.
