Metamorphoses / Sebastian Dingens

Metamorphoses

masterclass | Sebastian Dingens

Joost Van Duppen and Sebastian Dingens bring their personal take on Field Recording, starting from their own experiences. After a performance by Joost Van Duppen (Silence of the Arctic) and a presentation/master class by Sebastian Dingens (Metamorphoses), there will be a short follow-up discussion between the two artists and the audience.

In the master class Metamorphoses, we'll listen to the recording of the landscape and how it can be transformed into music. From field recordings, historical maps and statistical information, to the wind playing the marimba and the canal turning the oscillation knob. And vice versa. Through playful experiments and musical excerpts, we seek a deeper and broader understanding of the physical world around us through the sound of landscape.

Flagey, Week van de Klank / Semaine du Son

After studying classical guitar, Sebastian’s interest moved towards free improvisation and noise music, playing with Glenn Branca, ChampdAction, DVDV and the dadaïstic Varkenshond. He composed music for dance and theater, building instruments of his own design.

However he worked for professional studio’s, made audio guides and radio shows, he never lost the taste to experiment with microphones and objects, curious for unexpected sounds. Influenced by his interest in field recording, his practice moved towards the act of listening itself, leading to the creation of audio walks, listening guides and sound installations.Within Musica’s Collectief Publiek Geluid he started using the landscape itself as a source- and inspiration for composition, integrating environmental, instrumental and synthetic sounds. He now works under the umbrella of the Sonic Research Kitchen, discovering new sounds through radical manipulation and translating the tangible world into music, alone and in collaboration with fellow artists. Most of the time his work combines all of these steps on his meandering path through sound and music creation, mixing, mangeling and ever intertwining to new results.
