Birth Wars

Janet Jarman

Told through deeply personal stories in the trenches of the Mexican healthcare sector, “Birth Wars” chronicles a power struggle between doctors and midwives in Mexico about whose vision of childbirth should prevail. The film takes viewers on a journey into two worlds riven by prejudices and antagonism and explores how building bridges between these worlds could help save lives.

  • Following the screening at 16.45hrs, there will be a Q&A session with Janet Jarman.
  • Following the screening at 19.00hrs, a panel discussion will take place discussing the status of midwives in Belgium.

Before the panel discussion commences, Maud Van Walleghem will read an extract from her new book ‘Hector was here’ in Dutch. After this reading, the panel discussion will start, in English.


The discussion will be led by Leen De Witte (Radio 1 presenter). The panel consists of:

  • Janet Jarman, Director of Birth Wars.
  • Midwife of the Birth Matters group.
  • Maud Van Walleghem, Author of ‘Hector was hier’, human rights activist and mother.
  • Roxanne Van Nuland, Gynaecologist at St. Jan hospital in Brussels and member of the group ‘Young gynaecologists of the Flemish Association of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (VVOG).
  • Aline Schoentjes, Founder of Amala birthing organisation and advisor of the Professional Union of French-Speaking Midwives (UPSFB)
