This is not the first time Samuel Hasselhorn, first prize winner of the 2018 Queen Elisabeth Competition, and pianist Julien Libeer share the stage at Flagey's Studio 4. Following their acclaimed performance of Schubert's Winterreise in 2022, they now present Schönberg's Das Buch der Hängenden Gärten. Although written atonally, the songs sound surprisingly passionate, lyrical and romantic. Throughout the program, Hasselhorn and Libeer illustrate how composers such as Schubert, Brahms, Wolf and Mahler metaphorically looked over Schönberg's shoulder as he wrote these ingenious songs.
