Moondog / Stefan Lakatos

Brussels Philharmonic + Ill Considered

double bill: Celebrating Moondog

A composer you would usually spot on the streets of New York with a dainty Viking helmet on his head? The music industry has its fair share of eccentrics, but Moondog will always be in a class of his own.

Undefinable manoeuvring between genres, while also inventing some of his own instruments, the street musician and poet was a unique figure who could nevertheless count on (artistic) respect from all sides. In 1969, at the request of record label Columbia, he started working with symphonic sounds. Brussels Philharmonic performs the resulting vinyl live in its entirety.

Celebrating Moondog:

Musician, composer, poet, instrument designer, and cult figure dubbed ‘the Viking of 6th Avenue’ – Moondog was all these things. Blind and homeless in New York, he gained international fame with his music, which blended Native American rhythms, jazz, and classical elements, laying the groundwork for minimalism. Flagey dedicates a day to celebrating the life and work of this iconic composer, who passed away 25 years ago.

Moondog Symphonic + The Moondog Songbook

Discover Moondog's work in two distinct ways during this unique Double Bill. The Brussels Philharmonic will perform early symphonic pieces from the album Moondog (1969, Columbia Masterworks). In contrast, Ill Considered will showcase how Moondog’s music continues to inspire jazz musicians to craft their own unique interpretations. An evening not to be missed!
