Hidden Gems
Cello Virtuoso: The Golden Era of Dazzling Technique and Expression!
Prepare to be mesmerized as six of today’s most remarkable cellists—Santiago Cañón-Valencia, Natalie Clein, Anne Gastinel, Taeguk Mun, Xavier Phillips, and Aleksey Shadrin—join forces with Belgian pianist Stephanie Proot for a special moment showcasing the rich and diverse repertoire of the “Golden Era” of cellist-composers.
The concert opens with Rising Korean star Taeguk Mun who captivates us with a trio of virtuosic pieces: the fiery rhythms of David Popper's Vito, the lyrical beauty of Piatti’s Notturno, and the lighthearted agility of Popper’s Papillon. He is followed by Natalie Clein who takes the stage with Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s emotionally intense Suite for Solo Cello, a newly born work (2024) that pushes the instrument to its expressive limits.
Aleksey Shadrin presents the nostalgic grace of Karl Davydov’s Adieu and the playful elegance of Julius Klengel’s Scherzo. The afternoon concludes with the brilliance of Santiago Cañón-Valencia, who dazzles with three exquisite works by Popper: the lyrical Menuetto, the delicate Feuillet d’Album, and the breathtakingly virtuosic (and iconic) Elfentanz.
Join us for a spectacular afternoon of cello virtuosity, from Romantic gems to contemporary masterpieces!
