An Evening of European Jazz : The Low Countries

Winterjazz

20:15 - Kapok
Kapok is an extraordinary fusion of instruments who loves to venture off the beaten path. In their trademark line-up of horn, guitar and drums, the trio sets off in search of new sounds and rhythms. Kapok makes free, wild, adventurous music somewhere between jazz, rock and improvisation, and there is always a possibility that they play something completely different than planned. Their debut album Flatlands is a diverse and unusual album, that has been enthusiastically received by audience and press alike. Less than half a year after their official debut, Kapok managed to win the prestigious Dutch Jazz Competition 2012.

21:15 - Rembrandt Frerichs Trio
Rembrandt Frerichs, born in 1977 is a pianist with a broad perspective. He is familiar with the American jazz tradition, but wants to avoid the well-trodden path. His curiosity and knowledge of the art music of different parts of the world urge his music to develop constantly.

The Rembrandt Frerichs Trio has been a “working” band for a number of years. Looking back on their musical trip so far, it seems that they were at first united by their shared love for American jazz. After some time, however, this inspiration proved insufficient, and the trio started playing Rembrandt’s compositions exclusively. The three musicians began to create something that felt closer to home, without getting lost in a maze of mixed styles and traditions, but always approaching the music in an open way. Emotional content with a “fun-to-do” attitude.

"One of the highlights of the North Sea Jazz Festival" (Jazzmagazine)

22:45 - De Beren Gieren
In the space between expectation and surprise, you will find De Beren Gieren, providing robust evidence that gold can still be mined from the union of piano, bass and drums. Based on the compositions of Fulco Ottervanger, the young trio seeks for music and for each other. This is the key to their music; the challenge of using the power of improvisation on the quest for a new form. Their hard-to-pronounce name starts to ring a bell amongst music lovers from all over Europe. What might come in the future of these young talents it is only to be seen.

"Sun-drenched trio "De Beren Gieren" of Ghent is a piano trio with a keen sense of romance, but also groove, with a completely effortless music." (Christoph Giese, Jazzthetik magazine)
