Big Nowhere [creation]
Winterjazz
1950. Los Angeles. The strains of bebop combos emanate from club doorways. The city of excess, boulevards of crime, the City of Angels screaming with police sirens on every intersection.
We have entered James Ellroy’s novel “The Big Nowhere”. Clarinettist Jean-Louis Marchand and his big band trace its meanders and rhythms, perfectly recreating its murky atmosphere, made even more striking by live urban sounds. The performance poet Eli Finberg is the dazzling narrator of a mythical era and city that has yet to reveal all of its many secrets.
