Shirley is a non-conformist actress whose commitment to the evolution of her country is steadfast. Her internal monologues are supported by 13 Edward Hopper paintings in telling the story of 3 decades of US history (1930-1960). The Great Depression, the Second World War, McCarthyism, the Kennedy assassination and the Space Race all accompany the truly American images. Gustav Deutsch, the documentary maker and contemporary experimental artist (as well as musician, photographer and architect), directs this wonderfully intuitive essay which captivates with its unique manner.
