L’Idée + J’aime le noir et le blanc
Masereel found inspiration in an early printmaking technique: the woodcut, an old process revived by Gauguin and the Expressionists, who valued it highly because of its strong contrasts. Masereel’s woodcuts are indeed very black, stark and expressive, particularly suited to the social and pacifist pamphlets that were an important part of his work.
