Brahms Double & Requiem
Brussels Philharmonic & Vlaams Radio Koor
The annual festival of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel is featuring Brahms this year. His double concerto for cello and violin was a strange bird, full of contradictions. Unusually, it places both soloists on equal footing. Ein deutsches Requiem is about the way in which humanity deals with the tragedy of death, with the contrast between time and eternity, with grief and consolation. The composer did not wish to write music for the dead, but music that brings enlightenment to all who mourn a loved one and reflect on the finitude of their own existence.
