The Quartet. Why four?
Sonic tasting with mathematician Isar Goyvaerts
Why does a quartet consists of 4 voices, and not three or five? Whilst the religious trinity is based around the number 3, man has embraced the number 4 as the symbol of earth and humankind. There are 4 cardinal points, 4 winds, 4 seasons, 4 elements (earth, air, fire water). Mathematician Dr. Isar Goyvaerts, Elsa De Lacerda and Julien Libeer explore the importance of 4 voices and 4 parts in the achievement of musical perfection, an aim which so many composers have explored over the years through the art of string quartet composition.
This sonic tasting takes place before the concert of Jerusalem Quartet with Gary Hoffman and Miguel da Silva.
