A Gentle Creature
Krotkaya | Sergei Loznitsa
To deliver a parcel to her imprisoned husband, a woman suffers all the rebuffs and humiliations of a corrupt, arbitrary and inhumane bureaucracy. Adapted (very) freely from a short story by Dostoevsky, this is an unfathomably black portrait of a soulless Russia, where there is no place for a “gentle woman”. Brutal, intense, with a stylistic rigour that bears the hallmarks of a unique and gifted filmmaker, who patently has some scores to settle.
