Candide Symphonic Orchestra & Patrick Leterme
Bernstein : Candide (Part 1)
A perfect companion piece for West Side Story (written at the same time), with its portrayal of a modern, urban, foot-tapping America, Candide in contrast offers us a Europe of waltzes and “gavottes” as the young Candide undergoes a philosophy-tinged journey of discovery across the continent. With its complete lack of any jazz inflections, we might find ourselves frustrated by Candide... if it were not for its passionate tribute and original take on Enlightenment Europe, as seen from America.
