Shostakovich 10
Michail Jurowski comes from an old Russian family where music had been in the blood for generations. In the Moscow of his youth, Dmitri Shostakovich was a good friend of the family. No coincidence, therefore, that today Michail Jurowski is considered one of the most influential interpreters of Shostakovich’s music.
In 1953, when Jurowski was only 8 years old, Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony was premièred: the first one he wrote after a period when out of protest he wrote few larger works. Only after the death of Stalin did Shostakovich, ‘liberated’, return to the symphonic form, with what many consider his ultimate symphonic work: the 10th.
