A matinee with Ysaÿe
The repertoire of French melody underwent a major development at the end of the nineteenth century. Its free form and its attachment to the poetic text were reasons for Symbolist composers to take over the genre. Today, these works by Fauré, Debussy, Hahn and many others can be understood as sound paintings, miniatures, in which all the composer's art is condensed.
