Rolf Schieder & Marc De Kesel

Germany and religion

Rolf Schieder & Marc De Kesel

Jan Assmann unfortunately had to cancel his visit to Flagey. Prof. Dr. Rolf Schieder will replace him. Customers who bought a ticket for this evenement will be contacted by e-mail.

It is with great pleasure that Flagey and the Goethe-Institut welcome the German theologian Rolf Schieder (*1953). Schieder received his PhD degree in Protestant theology and taught as professor of Praktische Theologie und Religionspädagogik (practical theology and religious education) at the Humboldt University of Berlin from 2002 - 2018. In his 2008 publication „Sind Religionen gefährlich?“ (Are Religions Dangerous?) Schieder discusses the relationship between violence and religion and outlines the possibilities of an interplay of political and religious spheres in order to react to urgent global questions. Here and in other publications, Schieder contributed significantly to the monotheism debate (with Jan Assmann and Peter Sloterdijk, among others), which specifically discusses the relation between violence and monotheistic religions.

He will talk to the Belgian religion specialist Marc De Kesel. Starting from their view on religious thinking and its experience in the past, they will talk about God and the gods in these times, the way religion exists in today's society, exerts influence and stirs our minds. What is the relationship between religious and political culture in Germany, Belgium and Europe? Is religion in a crisis? And does the Bible have emancipatory potential?

The conference will be moderated by writer Geert van Istendael.

Throughout the season 19-20, Flagey and Goethe-Institut Belgien present a joint initiative, "Les Deutschlands". During various concerts, lectures and debates, we will present today's Germany in all its diversity. Flagey will be hosting some of the greatest German performers and composers of classical and jazz music, and bring together eminent scientists, thinkers, artists, filmmakers and writers, who will share their vision on Germany with each other and with us.
