Birds: Messiaen & Stravinsky
Brussels Philharmonic, Jun Märkl, Jan Michiels
"Ecoutez les oiseaux, ce sont de grands maîtres", was the advice of Paul Dukas to his pupil Olivier Messiaen. He took this advice to heart: in Oiseaux exotiques he brings together an impressive collection of birdsongs from Asia, North and South America. The music inspires the Brussels Philharmonic and pianist Jan Michiels to create a fascinating tribute to the kingdom of birds, including Stravinsky's Le Chant du Rossignol in which the living nightingale from Andersen's fairytale wins over its mechanical counterpart.
