Aruán Ortiz Ensemble - Flamenco Criollo
At the request of the Flamenco Biennale, Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz, "one of the most versatile and exciting pianists of his generation" (Downbeat), has put together a unique ensemble that explores its flamenco roots and original influences. Musicians from Morocco, Palestine, Cuba, the US and Spain combine melancholic sounds from Al-Andaluz with energetic rhythms from Africa in their surprising contemporary compositions. You can hear how Moorish melodies travelled to colonial Cuba via Spain in the 17th and 18th centuries and gave colour to the catchy and whirling music of Cuba.
