Les Hirondelles de Kaboul
Zabou Breitman, Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec
There was obvious potential in Yasmina Khadra’s novel, a dramatic portrait of Kabul crushed by the ideological tyranny of the Taliban. That Zabou Breitman chose (for the first time in her career) animation to adapt the story to the screen may come as a surprise, but the result is a joy: this heart-rending story of sacrifice and oppression moves, outrages, and transports the viewer into its complex themes and the quality of its rendering.
