Josep

Aurel

The French illustrator Aurel makes his debut as a director with the animated film Josep. The (real life) title character, artist Josep Bartolí, is one of the half million Spanish Republicans who fled to France in 1939, after Franco's take-over of power. They ended up in camps where they became the playthings of sadistic guards. Aurel shows Josep's hardships in gritty colours. For his later, more joyous life in Mexico and the USA, he chooses vivid colours.
