International Competition 7

Out of nearly 6800 short films submissions (received in 2020 and in 2021), 98 films from 36 countries will compete for the prizes in the International Competition.

In addition to the films selected in 2021, the 24th edition of the BSFF also welcomes the films selected for the International Competition in 2020 which had to be postponed.

Winners of the Grand Prix in the International Competition and National Competitions are considered for pre-selection for the Oscars® in the Best Fiction/Animation Short Film category provided that the film complies with the Academy’s rules.

Sinkende Schiffe | Andreas Kessler
Germany - Fiction - 2020 - 21' - Color
Sara and Theo take a trip with their ten year old son to the Black Forest. A fight escalates and Theo abandons his wife and son in the forest. Back in the hotel everything returns to normal. At least so it seems. In the afternoon, the three set off to the lake. Theo’s rage explodes again and we understand more and more that violence is a part of this family’s everyday life.

Two women meet while on holiday and their brief but intimate encounter leads one of them to later recount it. With the audio of their conversations and beautifully shot 16mm visuals, we are taken through those few moments the two shared together. A film as a sweet and somber ritual of letting go.
