Los Abrazos del Rio + Besos Frios
Nicolas Rincon-Gilles
The Magdalena River, the principal river of Colombia, was also the setting for Gille’s first feature film. It is steeped in legends, notably that of the Mohan, a dangerous seducer who sets traps for women and fishermen. But today, this diabolical spirit seems almost benign in the face of the “vigilantes” whose countless victims are borne away by the river. The film gives voice to a population struggling to survive, powerless against the brutality of the armed groups.
