Frantz

François Ozon

The First World War has ended: a demobbed Frenchman arrives in a German village and meets a young woman who is mourning the death of her brother... This film takes as its starting point a play that had already inspired a Lubitsch classic (The Man I Killed, 1931). The immaculate black-and-white images places this film squarely in the canon of a worthy genre that now all too rare: melodrama. Winner of 6 Césars. As for the exquisite Paula Beer, she achieved a rare double: best young performer at the Césars and Venice.
