The Moon has risen
Tsuki wa noborinu | Kinuyo Tanaka
The starting point for this film was a screenplay discarded by Ozu. A widower has three daughters, and their respective marriages are his central concern. Ozu’s favourite actor, the unforgettable Chishu Ryu, takes on the role of the father, bringing to bear his skill at underplaying and his talent for making the unspoken spoken. There is no connection with Chekhov, but the three sisters are very much akin to their endearing Russian counterparts.
