The wandering princess
Ruten no ôhi | Kinuyo Tanaka
An aristocratic Japanese woman marries the brother of the emperor of Manchuria, but the Soviet invasion of 1945 condemns the husband to captivity and the wife (and daughter) to exile. A foray into historical cinema for Kinuyo, with female victimhood the main focus of the drama. Machiko Kyo, unforgettable in Rashomon, radiates both in happiness and in distress. Tanaka’s first film in colour.
