Collegium Vocale Gent
Philippe Herreweghe
If there is one composer who epitomizes the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, it is Claudio Monteverdi. In his revolutionary innovative style, it was not the music itself that took precedence, but the expressive reading of the text. As the psalms and sumptuous concertos of the Vespro della Beata Vergine from 1610 show, the two worlds are not mutually exclusive - quite the contrary! Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent show us how the aesthetic tension between the two, or the combination of them, turns out to be a new source of inexhaustible artistic richness.
