Tsai Ming-liang: independent filmmaker

A Taiwanese filmmaker who grew up in Malaysia, Tsai is an auteur in the fullest sense of the word.

The formal and semantic constants of Tsai Ming-liang’s films make them immediately recognisable. A great proponent of the long take, he imbues his works with a calculated slowness, which gives them a fascinating power of enchantment. His characters are immersed in alienating urban contexts, to which the omnipresent theme of water (pervading the frame, invading the scenery) gives a most particular identity. Major world film festivals have acclaimed his talent for obsessive atmospheres.
