American Comedy Classics
Under their light-hearted music-hall guise, classic American comedies portrayed a society in transition, marked by crises and conflicts.
Lubitch, Cukor, Wilder, Capra were its most enthusiastic standard-bearers. In many ways, they marked the first half of the twentieth century, when burlesque (Chaplin, Langdon, the Marx brothers) intersected with the star system and its gilt-edged roles for Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper. Refined archetypes under the spell of chaste love, heroes made all the more endearing for it. A cocktail of humour to while away the summer under the Hollywood sun.
