Frank Capra, comedies and more
Director, screenwriter, patriotic documentary maker, storyteller of the people, pioneer of screwball comedy, founder of his own production studio. Frank Capra wore many hats throughout his career.
Adulated by the crowds, he was one of the first directors whose name appeared before the title of the film and to have almost complete creative freedom in the American studios. A true idealist of the “American dream”, his inexhaustible optimism allowed him to pursue a prolific and multifaceted career. From his silent movie beginnings to his commercial (and artistic) triumphs, the filmmaker’s career is not limited to the “pure comedy” with which he is most readily identified. Nearly 30 years after his death, a dip into his extraordinary catalogue of films seems to us like the perfect summer programme.
