Louis Malle
Many landmark films since the 1950s bear the signature of Louis Malle: Ascenseur pour l’échafaud, a film noir masterpiece with the music of Miles Davis; Lacombe Lucien and Au revoir les enfants, bold, intimate studies of occupied France. Many of his works flirted with the limits of accepted morality, stirring controversy in their time: Les amants, Le souffle au cœur, Le feu follet, La petite…
The free spirit of the French director is also evident in his surrealist inspirations (adaptations of Queneau and Bataille, respectively: Zazie dans le métro and Le souffle au cœur). His films have explored sensuality, suicide, incest, depression, but the director’s talent is revealed in the way he tackles such sensitive topics without looking to provoke or side-step the issues, refraining from judgement.
