Auteur animation: year 0?

Despite the power of the mainstream, despite popular belief, animation has never been a genre exclusively for children. Many animators, from the outset, have approached the genre with thematic and aesthetic ambitions for adult audiences. The release in 2019 of several major animated features was a highpoint for adult animation, which has often struggled to find an audience in cinemas. Might the critical and public success of some of the films in our programme herald a new era for creative animation?
