Kinuyo Tanaka
Kinuyo Tanaka (1909-1977) was one of the few women filmmakers in post-war Japan. She is best known to fans of the golden age of Japanese studios for her acting roles in a number of films, including masterpieces by Mizoguchi and Ozu. In 1953, she stepped behind the camera to direct her first film. In all, she made six feature films for different studios. Thanks to their recent restoration, these six works are finally being released in the West. These magnificent melodramas are a real discovery for Japanese film enthusiasts and feature unforgettable portraits of women. A unique voice in the storied history of Japanese cinema!
