Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Malle)

Louis Malle & Jazz

When jazz meets cinema

It was always a mystery to Louis Malle why American filmmakers never used jazz music in their films, since jazz is a unique and exciting phenomenon spawned by American culture. For his feature debut Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, Malle asked Miles Davis if he would provide the film music. The final score was recorded during one night, and the rest is history.

Many aspects of the film Le Souffle au coeur were based on childhood experiences of director Louis Malle. He suffered from heart murmurs, had tyrannical brothers, ... and of course his discovery of literature and jazz could not be missed.
