It is no secret that Chantal Akerman's films have been more appreciated abroad than they have been in her native Belgium. This international recognition reached a new peak on December 1, 2022, when her magnum opus Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles was voted the best film of all time by some 1,600 film specialists (directors, programmers, critics, academics,...) in the most recent decennial poll of the BFI (British Film Institute) in collaboration with their film magazine Sight & Sound. In the joy of celebration, one might have overlooked the fact that her documentary News from Home was also in this top 100, in 52nd place. Earlier this year, exactly 40 years after its initial release date, Toute une nuit was successfully rereleased in theaters in a restored version.
