Philippe Herreweghe starts his residency at Flagey
Philippe Herreweghe starts his residency at Flagey with the Collegium Vocale Gent on December 4 in the stunning Church of La Cambre Abbey, the beginning of a long-term cooperation in Brussels.
Collegium Vocale Gent is closely linked to Philippe Herreweghe, its mentor, conductor and artistic director. He is a native of Ixelles, and will now become our first Cantor of Flagey. Making reference to his ultimate composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, he will not only adopt at Flagey a role as a performing musician, but also act as a mentor for young people from all possible sections of the population. For his first two concerts in the context of his residency at Flagey, Philippe Herreweghe choose two highlights of the Baroque repertoire: the madrigal bundle Israelis Brünnlein by Johann Hermann Schein, Bach's predecessor and cantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, and the magisterial Hohe Messe by Johann Sebastian Bach himself. These joint concerts with cantor Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent are also part of the series "Circle of Silence". The Circle of Silence is a joint idea of several urban and rural cultural centres of Estonia, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Poland, France, and of course Belgium, which are located in places with great architectural value. The Circle of Silence events aspire to offer European citizens new ways of understanding the world.
