Pierrot lunaire

Brussels Philharmonic

“The moon, like a white scimitar upon a black ornate cushion, curves in nocturnal glory – through a resplendent mournful night. Pierrot wanders restlessly, stares with a broad gesture upon the moon, like a white scimitar upon a black ornate cushion.” These are some of the verses by Belgian Albert Giraud on which Schönberg inspired his Pierrot lunaire. This famous work from 1912 embodies the search for new forms of expression in the early 20th century. Schönberg expresses this Zeitgeist with - for the first time - the use of ‘Sprechstimme’ in this musical melodrama.
