Yeol Eum Son / Marco Borggreve

Closing concert

Buoyed by the grace and virtuosity of South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son, the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted for the first time by Lio Kuokman, offers us a program to be savored with fresh eyes and an ear hungry for bubbling sonorities! Works that cross the boundaries between Ravel's refined French classicism and the innovative energy of Gershwin's American jazz. Each in their own way, they have pushed back the boundaries of the orchestra and the piano. The evening opens with Maurice Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole, a work of shimmering colors and bewitching rhythms, evoking the warmth and mystery of Spain. Next, Yeol Eum Son takes up one of the most daring challenges in the piano repertoire with the Concerto for the Left Hand, a fascinating work combining power and depth in writing of incredible orchestral richness. George Gershwin's famous Rhapsody in Blue will be featured, fusing jazz and classical, and Ravel's La Valse will bring the evening to a climactic close: an intoxicating orchestral whirlwind, where elegance mingles with irresistible dramatic intensity.
