Bach’s Magnificat & Mendelssohns Dream
Magnificat anima mea Dominum': these are the words of the Virgin at the moment of Visitation. Mary thus reaffirms her humility before the will of the Lord. As a reward, heaven rejoices with a triumphant trumpet blast, accompanied by the choir. The concert closes with Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, for which Mendelssohn composed the overture at the age of 17. Fifteen years later, he completed the score. The miraculous and fairy-tale character of the music makes it one of his favourite works even today.
