Bach Cello Suites - Part I
In 1825, the first printed publication of Bach's Six Suites or Studies for solo cello appeared. The term 'studies' may well refer to the commercial and pedagogical intent of the music, but it does not do justice to the enormous stimulus that this music was for the history of the cello instrument, which was then still competing with the viola da gamba. The suites explore with great virtuosity all the registers of the instrument, show its expressive possibilities, and even creates the illusion of polyphonic counterpoint.
