Cesar Franck's Pianos
Before the Belgian-French César Franck became one of the most prominent composers, he was known as a talented keyboard virtuoso and made extensive concert tours. Up to the 1840s, the piano was the central focus of his compositions. This changed in 1858, when he started writing music for organ and harmonium (also known as the pump organ). On these instruments, he proved himself to be a brilliant improviser, and the grand and rich sounds of the organ inspired his musical works which are still famous today. Throughout the Piano Expo you can discover several of the historic pianos and harmoniums by Erard, Pleyel, Alexandre and Mustel on which the Belgian-French composer César Franck played and composed.
