Kubrick at war
Stanley Kubrick’s films plumb the depths of human nature, exploring how we codify behaviour to protect us from ourselves or from the vices of our creations. War has therefore always been fertile ground for the filmmaker, as an acute manifestation of the conflict between our instinct for survival and our self-destructive tendencies. Conflict that is masked by conditioning, by nuclear security measures or by supposedly responsible orders. This theme runs through four of his films: one set in the First World War, one in Vietnam and two in imaginary conflicts.
